Last Assignment: Part 4

What I learned in this class::

I will take away many important points from this class.

I now understand that patenting is a very importance means to protect your intellectual property. However patenting is not always easy. Our legal system — with many clauses and constraints — makes it quite difficult and takes lots of time to grant a patent. Thus, we should start early! Know the in's and out's of the patent and prior art to the patent so as to not infringe on a previous patent.

I also understood patent trolls, why they came into such power, and how they endanger the current patent system.

And finally, I will take way the idea that we can all build from each other. Creativity comes from finding ingenuity in things that already exists. This is by no means plagiarism of the sort we are taught against to do. Rather, we should learn from products & take their best parts and further develop it. You never know -- this could lead to your very own patent! (:

  1. Aradhana, first of all, I want to thank you for almost always reading my posts this semester! Your last point in this blog about “creativity comes from finding ingenuity in things that already exist” resonates with me. It is perhaps the most important takeaway that I got from this class. In North America culture, I was reminded so many times, especially in my past education, that copying other’s work is not right and creativity is not copying. But we all get our ideas from someone else. What I have not learned, and should have learned is that creativity allows room for copying. Copying and innovate get us much farther than we would have if everyone and every generation is building everything from scratch. I appreciate being told "copying" is okay before leaving school. One recommendation I have for your future blog is perhaps to change the font style. It looks great, but personally, it is hard to understand and read. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and again for accompanying my blogs this semester. Hope all will be well in the future!

  2. Pretty good post. I agree Patents are an important intellectual property tool and can be used for good or bad. In some cases, like NPE's, people use them to sue others and make money off that. Patents can also be crucial in a successful business. Any successful product or company has a comprehensive IP protfolio behind it. Maybe for improvement you could go more in depth about what NPE's do and more about the different parts of a patent like the abstract, claims, and diagrams. Overall, nice work!

  3. Hey! good blog post! I like how you were clearly clear and concise! It made is really easy to understand :) I also completely agree with you that creativity comes from collaborating with others and improving on whats already out there. I remember that TED talk we watched on fashion! I thought it was so interesting that the fashion industry is so lenient on copying. Its crazy! Anyways, thanks for the great blog posts this semester :) I really enjoyed reading them and watching your videos every week.

  4. Hi Aradhana,

I like how you made it clear that creativity comes through building off of each other. After this semester, I could not agree with such a statement any more. The experience in this class has been fantastic because people such as yourself has provided such clear insight into so many different topics that has allowed me to better understand the material that has been presented. The material that we covered definitely isn't something that is easy for any individual, especially people who have never read about patents, to understand and the collaborative nature behind this class truly allowed for all of us to thrive. Hopefully our patent system will reform itself in the future, as it is complicated as you mentioned, so that innovation and creativity are continually encouraged for entrepreneurs and those who seek to push the technology that is already in place.

  5. I think this was a really great post. It is short, but I think you identify the important points from this semester very succinctly. I like your point that you now understand the imporance of patents. While I think we all knew what a patent was before taking this class I really doubt that any of us understood how important they are and how much of an effect they can have on a company.
